Building and Construction
Building and construction is one of the biggest industries in Western Australia and employs approximately 10 per cent of the state’s workforce. Billions of dollars are invested in infrastructure and housing every year, resulting in an ever-growing industry full of exciting employment opportunities.
At SM TAFE we deliver practical, hands-on training that covers a wide variety of specialisations including; plumbing and gas, bricklaying and blocklaying, carpentry and joinery, civil construction, electrical and electrotechnology, floor and wall tiling, painting and decorating, solid plastering, telecommunications and wall and ceiling lining.
Our Building and Construction qualifications range from entry level pre-apprenticeship programs, through to apprenticeships and post-trade specialisations and are delivered at our specialist training facilities based at our Mandurah, Munster, Rockingham and Thornlie campuses.

Carpentry is fundamental to the construction industry and one of the most in-demand trades. A carpenter specialises in working with wood, metal and other materials to assemble, install and repair foundations.
Working both outdoors and indoors, the career of a carpenter can bring you a diverse range of jobs and there’s various specialities to choose from - you can see your work come to life in real houses and buildings, adding your own creative flair.Â
The skills of the carpenter are needed for the foundations and walls of our houses, through to the construction of offices, restaurants and retail developments, as well as on projects such as mining operations. This pre-apprenticeship will give you a taste of what it’s like to be a carpenter and put the foundations in place for your future.

Do you want a career in a trade that has everything covered?
Many trades in the building industry revolve around structural work that is essential but largely out of sight. The mortar trades, also called finishing trades, include all you can see, such as brick and blocklaying, solid plastering, wall and floor tiling and wall and ceiling lining. This course allows you to get a taste of each of these trades, plus the safety and building constriction industry basic tool knowledge to begin a career in mortar trades.
Study in specialist facilities
Rockingham campus features modern workshops with tools and equipment you will find on any work site. Demonstration areas include spaces where entire formwork and housing can be built, with special wet areas dedicated to solid plastering, ceiling and tiling applications, plumbing pit, gas and electrical stages. Our timber workshop includes multiple lathes and saws for large scale construction.

Set down the ground work for your career
The Certificate II in Drainage is suitable for people working in the plumbing industry that specialise in ‘ground works’. South Metropolitan TAFE trains and assesses the Certificate II in Drainage at Rockingham as part of our general plumbing training program.
The standard term for a contract is 18 months. Achieving this qualification is a good stepping stone towards completing a full plumbing qualification.

Course in Painters Registration
This course has been developed to allow graduates to apply to the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) to become a registered painter.

This course allows tradespersons and learners to demonstrate essential knowledge and skills to establish estimated costs associated with the acquisition of materials and labour on building and construction sites, together with the application of relevant overhead costs and margins. The knowledge of physical resources and supplier identification, assessment of the availability of and requirements for skilled labour, application of appropriate codes, regulations and approvals processes is essential in enabling the learner to identify business and administrative requirements of a painting contractor wishing to commence their own business. The course also provides students who do not hold any formal qualifications in painting and decorating with the ability to demonstrate essential knowledge and skills in surface preparation and coating systems, knowledge of colour theory and wallpapering techniques.

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to establish the estimated costs associated with the acquisition of materials and labour on building and construction sites, together with the application of relevant overhead costs and margins. Knowledge of physical resource and supplier identification, assessment of the availability of and requirements for skilled labour and application of appropriate codes, regulations and approvals gaining processes is essential.
CPCCPD3021A Prepare surfaces for painting
This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to restore, repair and prepare different material surfaces for the application of paint. The unit includes planning and preparation for the work, preparation of new or uncoated surfaces, preparation of previously coated surfaces, preparation of previously wallpapered surfaces for painting and completion of clean-up activities.
82985 PRB colour and wallpapering
This module specifies the outcomes required to colour-match new and existing painting finishes and apply wallpaper to walls of different materials to form a protective and decorative finish.
Completion of all four units from the Course in Painters Registration will satisfy requirements for licensing.  Applicants should review the requirements for Painters Registration on the DMIRS website to ensure that they enrol into the correct units.
