Painting and Decorating

Painting and Decorating is known as the finishing trade of the building industry. It encompasses areas such as internal and external painting and decorating on a variety of surfaces, and includes the decoration of new and existing homes, hospitals, shops, hotels and buildings of historical significance. Signcrafters use a variety of materials and techniques such as painting, computer graphics, vinyl, wood, foam, plastic, glass, gold leaf and engraving to provide eye catching designs.

This qualification is directly aligned with priority industry areas where the jobs are today, and into the future. As part of the state government Lower fees, local skills initiative, from 1 July 2020 through to 31 December 2021 you'll only pay half the course fees, capped at $1,200; or $400 (plus resource fee) if you're aged 15—24 or eligible for a concession. Painters Registration - Business and Estimating Skill Set

There are two units of the Course in Painters Registration included in this short course.

AUL08 Establish legal and risk management requirements of small business (BSBSMB401)

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify and comply with all regulations affecting the business. It applies to individuals operating a small business who use analytical skills to interpret legislation and regulations and develop procedures to manage compliance.

W9241 Identify and produce estimated costs for building and construction projects (CPCCBC4004A)

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to establish the estimated costs associated with the acquisition of materials and labour on building and construction sites, together with the application of relevant overhead costs and margins. Knowledge of physical resource and supplier identification, assessment of the availability of and requirements for skilled labour and application of appropriate codes, regulations and approvals gaining processes is essential.

Participants must have previous experience in the painting industry and be seeking licensing with the Building Commission.

Completion of all four units from the Course in Painters Registration will satisfy requirements for licensing.

The Course in Painters Registration will provide you with the skills and knowledge to work as a contractor in the painting and decorating industry. You will learn about surface preparation, coating systems, colour theory and wallpapering techniques. You will also learn how to estimate costs associated with the acquisition of materials and labour on building and construction sites and understand the practice of running a painting and decorating business.

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to restore, repair and prepare different material surfaces for the application of paint. The unit includes planning and preparation for the work, preparation of new or uncoated surfaces, preparation of previously coated surfaces, preparation of previously wallpapered surfaces for painting and completion of clean-up activities.

Get Skills Ready for a job with construction safety skills.

Get ready for a safe construction career

Learn the skills to prepare for a career in construction and pick up your White Card along the way.

This skill set will give you an introduction to working in construction, teaching you safety and accuracy in planning for, setting up and beginning a construction project.  You will learn to use tools and equipment safely and the rules and procedures for safe work on site, plus you will work on a construction project, ready to add to your portfolio. 

This course is ideal as a start to a building and construction pathway, building the basic safety skills for wet trades, plumbing, carpentry and joinery.

Gain these skills:

  • Plan and prepare, set up and use levelling device and worksite clean-up
  • Identify and assess risks of work tasks, identify hazardous materials and other hazards on work sites, plan and prepare for safe work practices, apply safe work practice and follow emergency procedures
  • Plan and prepare tools, equipment, signage and barricades, calculate materials and ready them for use, apply environmental requirements
  • Determine component requirements and assembly sequence
  • Operate hand tools and use equipment safely
  • Quality checking construction outcomes against plans
  • Understanding work, health and safety of construction projects, worksites, PPE, communication and first aid procedures, safety symbols

This course is delivered 5 days a week for 3 weeks and then students will complete a 4th week on work placement, to be arranged by SM TAFE. The next course dates are:
