Lower Fees Local Skills courses

Get a nationally recognised and accredited qualification but pay only half-price course fees!

From tourism and hospitality to civil construction, cyber security to commercial cookery, aged care to engineering, electrical to heavy vehicle mechanical technology — to name just a few — there really is something here for everyone under the Lower fees, local skills program, and this is where the jobs are!

These qualifications are matched up with the skills employers are looking for, so you'll be job ready. And they're available from TAFE colleges and a selection of private training providers across WA — some are also available online. 

What's new?

In January 2020, the Lower fees, local skills program started with 34 half price course fees qualifications. On 2 July 2020, a further 39 half price course fees qualifications were announced in a broad range of industry areas, and from January 2021 another 70 qualifications will have their course fees slashed.

You will learn the practical skills and knowledge to plan, develop, implement and monitor programs and services for seniors. This course will teach you the skills to assess the needs of older people with complex circumstances and plan and conduct group and recreation programs for seniors. You will also learn how to monitor services, implement and monitor health and safety policies and procedures and organise an effective work environment. You you will undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned.

This qualification builds on the skills and knowledge you would have gained in Certificate III in Individual Support or Certificate III in Aged Care.

The units of study are more demanding and provide a deeper understanding of the issues concerning aged clients and service provision for this target group. Graduates will be able to enter the workforce as direct service providers in an agency that provides services to seniors.

  • This Qualification is available via full-time study or flexible delivery. 
  • This Qualification is delivered over one semester at Rockingham, but over two semesters at Mandurah.

Are you looking to join a school of fish lovers?

This qualification is the crucial first step towards an exciting career in aquaculture. This course provides students with a range of core skills and knowledge relevant to working in the aquaculture industry. Graduates go on to further studies or working in a range on environments including onshore aquaculture facilities, offshore culture facilities and the ornamental fish industry.

Gain the following skills and knowledge:

  • Handling and harvesting stock,
  • Preparing stock for live transport,
  • Monitoring stock and environmental conditions,
  • Producing algal cultures, and
  • Working effectively in the seafood industry

Aquaculture is a fast-growing industry. In fact, The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) issued a report in 2018 stating that ‘aquaculture is fastest growing food production sector worldwide’. Typical entry-level jobs for those holding Certificate II include:

  • Australian and overseas aquaculture farms
  • Hatcheries and nurseries   
  • Live post-harvest holding facilities, such as processing plants, wholesalers or 
  • Transporters, pet shops, public aquaria, zoos or other facilities with aquatic animals 

Study Modes

This course is offered fulltime classroom based in semester one, and offered via blended, flexible delivery in semester two.  This enables remote students or students with other commitments to pursue their passion for aquaculture. Flexible delivery includes 2.5 weeks of compulsory practical classes on campus.

Study in a specialised facility in the maritime heart of Fremantle:

Fremantle campus features extensive salt and freshwater aquaculture facilities, and experienced staff which offers plenty of relevant hands-on opportunities. Our staff have involved students in the culture and applied research projects of many marine and freshwater organisms over the last two decades including species such as abalone, dhufish, yellowtail kingfish, marron and barramundi.

Automation is just one of the Industry 4.0 trends in accelerating the efficiency of organisations and utilising new and emerging technologies to automate processes. Be ahead of the curve and ensure your path to a job of the future.

This course allows students to develop a good understanding of the emerging technologies in the resources sector. Learn how automation is innovating mobile and fixed plant operations, get an introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and process control operations. These skills are in high demand in the sector, so graduates will be well placed to pursue a traineeship or apprenticeship following this course. 

The course will equip students with the underpinning knowledge and skills to demonstrate:

Do you want to build a career from the foundations up to the ridge flashing?

When you complete the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) you will be ready for a career as a construction site manager, or (with additional experience) registered building practitioner.

Prospective applicants should already have (or have by course completion date) 7 years or more experience in the Building Industry.

You will gain the knowledge and skills to manage effectively in the building and construction industry, coordinating the construction of residential buildings, building and contract law, quantities and estimating, site safety, timber code, project management, building contracts, and workplace health and safety.

This course covers the academic requirement for registration as a builder with Building Services Board.

Mandurah self-paced delivery

Delivery of the course can be done in six blocks (3 units per week over a 6-month period). Students will need to attend three days of face-to-face workshops per month. Assessments must be submitted within three months after enrolment, and your enrolment can start at any time of the year. Students are required to undertake self-paced, online activities.

Do you want a career among tomorrow's business leaders?

When you complete the Certificate IV in Business you will have a practical foundation to take you into a number of business and corporate careers: office management, start-up business planning and marketing, and customer service.

You will gain the skills and knowledge to manage customer needs and feedback, develop and promote products and services, and play a supporting role in the recruitment of staff. You will acquire valuable experience in making presentations to groups, working in effective teams, and with workplace health and safety.

Fulltime attendance is equivalent to two and a half days a week.

Two different streams of this course are available at South Metropolitan TAFE, a "General" stream, and a "Pipe laying" stream.

The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care covers educators in children's services (early childhood) who are responsible for planning, implementing and managing programs in early childhood services, in accordance with licensing, accreditation and duty of care requirements. At this level educators have responsibility for supervision of other staff and volunteers. In most states it is the highest qualification required at director or service manager level for children's service centre based care and education.

Are you looking to turn your air-conditioning career up a notch?

Take the next step and learn how to install and commission HVAC. 

The Certificate IV HVAC Commissioning will prepare you for work with today’s computer controlled HVAC systems. Subjects covered will include: AHU’s, VAV’s, Chillers, Cooling Towers and ancillary equipment. Learn your way around a BMS system. You will, air balance, water balance as well as; fully install commission and optimise a VAV-AHU (using the BMS).

Learn to commission in hands-on sessions with experienced commissioning technicians. This course is delivered 90% via online and 10% on campus (evening). The theory part of the course will be online via pre-recorded videos and live online sessions. All practicals will be on-campus. Flexibility will be our guiding principle – the online component is self-paced; on-campus sessions will run throughout the Semester at your request. Come to TAFE when it suits you!

When you have completed the Certificate IV – you only need to complete 5 Units (some maths and some reporting) and you qualify for an Advanced Trade Diploma.

Caring in the home and community

When you complete the Certificate III in Individual Support you'll be on your way to a career as an aged care assistant.  

This course specialises in providing home and community support services and also supports relationships with carers and families.
