By the time you've finished this qualification, you'll know your radiator from your regulator and be in a good position to get yourself an apprenticeship in mechanics.

Specialist training facilities

South Metro TAFE's Carlisle Campus is WA's major centre for automotive and panel beating studies. Automotive apprentices and pre-apprentices enjoy state of the art facilities, including new vehicles, specialised repair and diagnostic equipment, fully equipped spray painting ovens, specialised workrooms and workshops. This excellent training program is highly competitive.

Kwinana campus offers specialist training in automotive air conditioning with purpose-built air-conditioning rigs, providing students with a high quality of learning and practical skills. It also boasts a large modern, indoor workshop where students undertake all their learning and training.

This qualification is directly aligned with priority industry areas where the jobs are today, and into the future. As part of the state government Lower fees, local skills initiative, from 1 January 2020 through to 31 December 2025 you'll only pay half the course fees, capped for each year at $1,200; or $400 (plus resource fee) if you're aged 15—24 or eligible for a concession. Find out more

Attendance in class

This course is equivalent to 3 days per week when studied full time across one semester.

At-home study

You will need to have the basic technical requirements for at-home study. If you don’t have access to a computer and WiFi at home, we recommend using our library computers during library hours.

Work placement

150 hours of work placement is mandatory for completion of this course. This will involve your attendance at a workplace/worksite during the program depending on the host employer and availability. Work placement will need to be organised on days/times around classes.

Uniforms and workwear requirements:

  • steel cap boots
  • cotton drill pants
  • cotton blend shirt with collar

What you need for your first day of class

On your first day you should bring your SM TAFE confirmation enrolment receipt, your student ID, stationery (pen and exercise book), text book - Automotive Mechanics by Ed May and Les Simpson.

In addition, the above uniform is required to be worn at all classes.
