Frequently asked questions about the GUEST WiFi network
I have connected to GUEST, but I cannot browse the Internet?
Make sure your device is not connected to any VPN application. Check your DNS settings and make sure they are set to Automatic.
Which wireless standard does the GUEST network support?
Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 are supported. For the technically inclined: 802.11n and 802.11ac on both 2.4 and 5ghz radios.
I entered the wireless password, but my device does not connect?
Make sure your device supports WPA2 AES (CCMP) encryption. The GUEST network does not support legacy WPA or TKIP encryption. More information about Wi-Fi security protocols and how to find out what protocol your device is using, visit the MakeUseOf website(opens in a new tab) .
A login will be provided to you 48 hours after your enrolment is finalised in our system. You will receive an email with instructions for setting up your account. After you have successfully completed your account setup, managing your password is done using the below instructions.
If you have recently enrolled in your next semester of units
Your password and login details won't change if you're continuing on the same course or have enrolled in a new course.
Changing your password, or what to do when your password expires
Your password will expire every 90 days, requiring you to change it.
Your new password needs to include three of the following character types: upper case letter, lower case letter, numbers, symbols and must be at least eight characters long.
To reset your password, go to the 'Password Manager' on https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com (opens in a new tab) . Once you have changed your password for Microsoft 365, it will give you immediate access to 'my enrolment' in the Student Hub, and take approximately 10 minutes to transfer over to Blackboard.
How to recover your account, or change your verification email or phone number
If you have changed your verification email address or phone number, you may find it handy to update them first, before using the Password Manager reset link above. Go here first: https://account.activedirectory.windowsazure.com/passwordreset/Register.aspx(opens in a new tab) .
If you need more assistance logging in
If you have tried your current login details and are still having issues, try changing your password first.
If it's more than 48 hours since your successful enrolment and you can't recover your account using your verification email address or phone number or are still having difficulties accessing the system, call 1800 001 001 or email info@smtafe.wa.edu.au and have your student ID handy. You can also visit a campus library for help in person.
Minimum technology requirements for online tools including Blackboard
Check that your computer meets the minimum system requirements.
- You will need a PC or Mac to access our Student Hub, internet connection and a supported browser(opens in a new tab) such as up-to-date versions of Chrome, Safari. Firefox or Microsoft Edge. iPads and Chrome books are not compatible with Blackboard software.
- For certain Blackboard functions (e.g. participating in a lecture using Collaborate), you may require speakers and a microphone. Your computer may have these built in, or you can use a headset.
- There are mobile apps for Blackboard and Collaborate, however, participating online can be difficult via the app, so we suggest that you use a recommended web browser. You can use a range of hardware (e.g. phone, tablet or computer) as long as the browser requirements are met.
If you don't have access to a computer that meets the minimum requirements, there are computers available for students to use at any of our campus libraries.
When accessing the SM TAFE Student App, you will be prompted to download the Microsoft Authenticator app. This adds an additional level of security to keep your personal information safe.
The app will keep your login authenticated for approximately 14 days before requiring that you authenticate again.
