Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

South Metropolitan TAFE has once again shone as finalists in the 2022 WA Training Awards. Nine student finalists and nominations in the  WA Large Training Provider and Industry Collaboration award categories have demonstrated the elite level of training provided by our organisation.

The finalists for the 13 training categories were announced on Friday 12 August by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery.

The awards highlight outstanding individuals and training organisations that demonstrate exceptional work, excellence or innovation in the vocational education and training (VET) sector.

Our Defence Industry Pathway Program was recognised for the Industry Collaboration Award for its outstanding success in providing hands on experience and training in the Henderson Shipbuilding precinct. The Defence Industry Pathway Program was developed with multiple stakeholders in response to increasing demand for workers in WA's shipbuilding industry, and a critical need to attract and train talent. The 12-month program provides graduates with a broad understanding of the maritime defence industry and exposure to the various career pathways.

The following students were recognised for their outstanding results in their training in 2021:

Apprentice of the Year
Josh Fraser - Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology
Megan Hazelden - Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade (Mechanical Fitter ZA)
Dylan Kent - Certificate III in Electrotechnology

CDT Award
Feng Yang - Certificate III in Commercial Cookery

International Student of the Year

Yu-Chien Cho - Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management

Trainee of the Year

Zoe Gillard - Certificate III in Defence Industry Pathways

Brittany-Leigh Wragg - Certificate III in Defence Industry Pathways

As well as the recognition these respected awards bring, individual winners each receive $3,000 that can be used to further their training or kick-start their career. The organisation winners will be recognised as industry leaders.

Winners of each category will be announced at the Presentation Ceremony on 21 September at Crown Perth.
