Jing gains barista dream and Student of the Year Award

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

English and Learning (Employment) student Jing Mei, of Canning Vale, has been named the South Metropolitan TAFE (SM TAFE) Culturally Diverse Student of the Year.

Originally from China, Jing has long dreamed of opening a family-owned coffee business in Perth, however, lacked the confidence to work and converse with local Australians.

In pursuing her goal to be a successful barista in the hospitality industry, she decided to enrol and complete a 22489VIC Certificate III in EAL (Employment), which included barista training electives.

Determined to succeed, Jing would learn five new vocabulary words after each lesson and then apply them in conversations.

After gaining her qualification and the practical skills she needed for her career, Jing is a strong advocate for her SM TAFE training.

“As a student from a different background, my verbal communication skills have been improved by learning to use idioms and slang that will help me communicate with Australian colleagues, supervisors and customers in the workplace,” she said.

“I can now understand, give and follow instructions with a lot more confidence.”

SM TAFE Executive Director Training Services and award panel chair Julia Burns said Jing’s passion, dedication and optimism for what’s possible are why she was considered the most deserving award recipient.

“Jing demonstrated commitment, motivation and enthusiasm for learning.  She also stimulated and inspired her peers to work towards meeting their targets, allowing for a vibrant and engaging learning environment,” Julia said.

SM TAFE’s Student Awards recognise the achievements of students from across the college, including winners in the categories Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year, Apprentice of the Year, Trainee of the Year, International Student of the Year, Vocational Student of the Year and the VET Secondary Student of the Year award.
