Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

International student Almas Rakhimov, of Leederville, has won the South Metropolitan TAFE (SM TAFE) International Student of the Year award.

He claimed the coveted award after completing a
AVI50119 Diploma of Aviation (Aviation Management) at SM TAFE.

Almas came to Australia to advance his career in the aviation sector after working as a flight attendant with Kazakhstan’s national carrier, Air Astana.

SM TAFE’s Student Awards recognise the achievements of students from across the college, including winners in the categories Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year, Apprentice of the Year, Trainee of the Year, Vocational Student of the Year, VET Secondary Student of the Year, and the Culturally Diverse Student of the Year Award.

SM TAFE Director of Strategic Partnerships and award panel chair Kim Wood said Almas’ enthusiasm and inspiring approach to learning made him a worthy recipient of the award.

“Almas is self-motivated student with strong leadership ability who strives for excellence,” Kim said.

“In the short time he has been in Australia, he has been involved in fundraising for charity, attended a conference on greener options in the aviation industry, and has recently been selected to participate in the Study Australia Industry Experience Program (SAIEP) – a two-week virtual program which brings students from across the country to engage in real-world industry projects.”

Almas was full of praise for his course and lecturers and hopes to further his TAFE qualifications by completing a TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

“When I speak to people and tell them I study at SM TAFE, I always say the lecturer is a guide to knowledge, the traveller is the student, and he decides where to go,” he said.

SM TAFE offers a range of aviation courses in flight and ground operations, management, and mechanical and pilot studies.
