At the heart of every business is a team of well-rounded operators; from the receptionist who is the first voice of the company, to an accounts clerk who maintains financial records, or an office manager who is responsible for the smooth running of people and processes.

A qualification in business can be the springboard to a range of career options. Providing a strong administrative skillset, the way is paved for employment in virtually any industry.

South Metropolitan TAFE (SM TAFE) student Addison Roode began her journey in business in 2021, dipping her toe in the water with a AE378 Business Skillset. This is a fee free course for 2024 that can be completed in just 20 weeks, and completion of the skillset could also assist with entry into a higher qualification.

Addison was born in South Africa, emigrating to Western Australia in 2003 and originally living in Kalgoorlie with her family prior to moving to Perth.

As a young student, she was unsure which path to take. However, she enjoyed the learning environment at SM TAFE along with the business focus and content and decided to broaden her studies. She is now undertaking the BSB30120 Certificate III in Business (Administration) course which provides simulated learning to build critical thinking and planning skills, design and produce documents and spreadsheets, and participate in safe and sustainable workplace practices.

“I wanted to study Business as it opens up a plethora of stable career opportunities and that’s what I hope to get out of the course; a qualification that offers job security,” Addison said.

Addison currently works in retail as a sales assistant and on completing her nationally recognised qualification from SM TAFE, hopes to get her foot in the door in business. Her career objective is to begin working in administration – perhaps as a receptionist in an office environment and she aims to work her way up to being an office manager.

The BSB30120 Certificate III in Business (Administration) Addison is undertaking provides a perfect starting point for students who don’t know which path they wish to take. It’s also an excellent platform for progressing to the BSB40120 Certificate IV in Business or a BSB50120 Diploma of Business. The business courses offered by SM TAFE are ideal for people wishing to:

  • Run their own business with confidence
  • Work in a business office environment
  • Add to existing operational skills to enhance employment opportunities
  • Begin learning skills with a view to advance to higher education

If the end goal is to get into university, starting business studies at SM TAFE can set up a pathway to achieve this. By completing the BSB50120 Diploma of Business, students may be able to apply for advanced standing for a Bachelor of Business; with the benefit of potentially saving time and money on your degree, depending on university guidelines.

Business at SM TAFE can help put the building blocks in place to set you up with lifelong skills that are transferable across many industries, equipping you for a versatile and successful career.
