Renowned Australian Chef Matthew Sartori is teaching the next generation of cookery students at South Metropolitan TAFE (SM TAFE), bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his role as Culinary Lecturer.

Mr Sartori began his cheffing journey at SM TAFE, completing a SIT30821 Certificate III in Commercial Cookery and developing a strong skillset to get job-ready for the kitchen.

Growing up in Kalgoorlie, Mr Sartori began working in a kitchen at 15, initially moving to Perth to pursue music, however, discovered a passion for cookery instead. He has honed his talent in some of WA’s most upmarket eateries including Jackson’s Restaurant, Greenhouse Perth and Restaurant Amuse.

Mr Sartori most recently led the team in the role of Head Chef at the prestigious fine-dining restaurant Wildflower at COMO The Treasury until early 2022.

In his current role at SM TAFE, Mr Sartori pairs his love of food and cookery with a drive to teach others the skills that have brought him so much joy and success. He generously shares his expert knowledge with students who aspire to become professional chefs or cooks, or further develop their cooking expertise.

“I had such a good experience as a student at SM TAFE and this inspired me to return to work as a lecturer,” Mr Sartori said. “The most rewarding part of my role is seeing students progress throughout the course and develop skills and knowledge which sets them up for success for their future roles in a kitchen.”

This year and in recognition of International Chefs Day on 20 October, SM TAFE is proud to acknowledge the skills and high calibre of all our cookery lecturers, including Mr Sartori.

Cookery students at SM TAFE can learn in the real-world setting of the award-winning Bentley Pines Training Restaurant which provides a live-interactive training environment at Bentley campus.

The purpose-built training facility Saltbush Training Restaurant at Mandurah campus opened in early 2023, providing a real-life setting for students to build their practical skills and become workplace ready. The restaurant is part of the new $16.9 million Mandurah Hospitality and Tourism Training Centre which delivers simulated training in commercial cookery, tourism and event management.
