Hair and makeup artist from Frozen joins SM TAFE team

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Lights, camera, action! Next year South Metropolitan TAFE (SM TAFE) is excited to launch a new makeup qualification where students will get hands-on experience in special effects makeup for screen and theatre productions.

The 12-month  Diploma of Screen and Media (Specialist Make-Up Services) course will be taught by industry specialist Manuao TeAotonga at SM TAFE’s Murdoch campus.

Manuao recently worked on Disney Australia’s touring production of Frozen and has designed makeup for musical productions including The Addams Family, The Little Mermaid, Wizard of Oz, Cinderella and more.

Manuao said the diploma offers the perfect launching pad for those who are wanting to take their hair and beauty skills to the next level.

“Students will learn everything from core makeup disciplines through to catwalk, screen, theatre and bridal techniques, with a focus on special effects makeup and prosthetics.

“There’s also a wig and hairstyling component included in the course.”

Manuao is one of Perth’s leading makeup artists and has performed on the stage in productions for over thirty years around Australia, with his love of makeup leading him to work behind the scenes transforming stars into stage characters.

In this course, students will be guided by Manuao to develop an understanding of the creative industries through their involvement in live work events such as theatre productions and will also be offered real-life work experience in the field, allowing them to graduate industry ready.

Students will develop their skills in the specialised student Hair, Beauty & Massage Student Clinics working on real clients and briefs, developing their unique style, technique and creative flair.

SM TAFE is thrilled to offer this new qualification, which is the highest in Australia for this field, encouraging students to carve out a career in creative industries and become job-ready to begin their journey as a professional creative makeup artist.

Applications to study Diploma of Screen and Media (Specialist Make-Up Services) in semester 1, 2023 are now open.
