Manage Pests by Applying Pesticides skill set

Wish to work as pest management technician? If so, you will need to be licensed.

This skillset allows students to complete the “CPPUPM3006 Manage pests by applying pesticides” unit of competency required to apply for a “Western Australia Provisional Pest Management Technician Licence”.

This course is aimed at workers who are currently employed in the Urban Pest Management industry. 

Note: this unit does not cover inspecting for, or managing timber pests, or non-chemical pest management where the environment is modified to manage pests.

•    applying pesticides to manage a range of non-timber pests such as ants, cockroaches, rodents and spiders
•    selecting appropriate equipment, pesticides and application methods to safely and efficiently manage pests

Eligibility requirements to apply for the provisional license with the Department of Health Western Australia:

To be eligible for a provisional licence you must:

  • be at least 17 years old
  • be a fit and proper person
  • be medically fit to handle restricted-use and other pesticides
  • be adequately qualified to undertake pest management treatments
  • intend to acquire sufficient knowledge and skills to become a licensed technician

Attendance in class

Class attendance is a requirement of this course.  This course is delivered over 4 days at our Bentley Campus. As part of the in-class component you will complete two practical assessments and a theory workbook assessment.

Work-based study

After successfully completing the theory component you will need to: 

  • apply to the WA Health Department for your Provisional License, 
  • complete 8 on the job field practicals and 
  • be assessed in the workplace by the course Lecturer.  

Upon completion of this, you will then achieve your unit of competency and be issued your statement of attainment for “CPPUPM3006 Manage pests by applying pesticides”.

Work placement

You must be employed in the Urban Pest Management industry

What you need for your first day of class

All students MUST be enrolled prior to attending class.  

On your first day you should bring your SM TAFE confirmation enrolment receipt, your student ID, stationery (pen, pencil, exercise book, eraser, ruler, calculator, highlighter, 2 ring binder/lever-arch file, USB storage device and a clipboard).

Uniform requirements

Students must provide their own personal protective equipment, including, as a minimum:

  • Work boots 
  • Collared long-sleeve shirt and work trousers
  • Overalls/coveralls
  • AS/NZS-Standard respirator with dust and vapour filter
  • Goggles/face shield
  • Elbow-length nitrile gloves
  • Wide-brimmed hat
  • Australian standard eye protection
  • Sun hat and Sunblock for outdoor activities 

Detailed specifics will be advised by your course lecturer during the orientation in your first scheduled class.
