This course is designed to give you the skills and knowledge needed within the conservation industry, to enter the work force in either private, local or state government sectors.

Please note: Conservation and Ecosystem Management involves physical labour and students will be required to demonstrate a reasonable level of fitness and mobility.

 

  • conduct ecological and cultural site inspections
  • maintain native ecosystems
  • Implement biological reintroduction
  • implement revegetation and natural area restoration works
  • safely prepare, apply, transport and store chemicals,
  • treat weeds, plant pests and disorders
  • identify plants, collect seed and propagate plants
  • operate machinery and workplace safety and health

 

In order to make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, you must take into account the essential skills and knowledge required to undertake this study.

  • enjoyment of practical work and working in varied weather conditions outdoors
  • a passion for conservation, ecosystems and the environment
  • high fitness levels and able to carry out manual work
  • enjoyment of nature and the outdoors
School Leaver Non-School Leaver AQF
OLNA or NAPLAN 9 Band 8 C Grades in Year 10 English and Maths or equivalent Certificate I or Certificate II

What you need for your first day of class

On your first day you should bring your SM TAFE confirmation enrolment receipt, your student ID, stationery (pen, pencil, exercise book, eraser, ruler, calculator, highlighter, 2 ring binder/lever-arch file, USB storage device and a clipboard for field work).

Uniform requirements

  • Steel-capped safety boots (mandatory within all classrooms)
  • Collared long-sleeve shirt and work trousers
  • Sun hat
  • Australian standard eye protection
  • Australian standard hearing protection
  • Sunblock
  • Gardening gloves
