SM TAFE graduate dresses bachelorettes

Jonté Pike’s fashion designs are stealing hearts all over the world thanks to the Bachelor television series.

Six of Jonté’s beautiful dresses received international attention when they were worn on last year’s Bachelor Australia show (featuring the Honey Badger).

The SM TAFE fashion graduate said she was blown away by the response after her dresses were worn on the show.

“The response was overwhelming, my designs were featured by bloggers, magazines and so many followers of the popular TV show,” Jonté said.

Jonté, from Marmion, studied a fashion diploma at South Metropolitan TAFE in Bentley in 2008 and won WA Vocational Student of the Year in 2011 and was also named runner-up Vocational Student of the Year at the Australian Training Awards later that year.

“I was really drawn to the industry-ready focus of the SM TAFE course at Bentley as it gave me a good insight into current industry methods,” Jonté said.

“The focus on pattern-making and construction in the course really helped bring my designs to life, and the continued support from my lecturers was very beneficial when starting out in the industry.”

The Jonté brand was launched in 2012 after showcasing at Perth Fashion Week, and her studio is now located in Balcatta.

“I love seeing customers feeling amazing about themselves in my clothing, it really is rewarding,” Jonté said.

“After great success from the last season of the Bachelor, you will have to keep an eye out for the next Bachelor to spot some Jonté Gowns!”

South Metropolitan TAFE Fashion Business Discipline Leader Lisa Piller said Jonté’s dedication to her work and immense talent has led her to this much deserved success.

“Jonté has a brilliant eye for design and is so passionate about learning - she deserves all of these accolades.

“We are so lucky to have Jonté mentor our students as part of their studies and she regularly takes on students for internships and has employed two of our graduates.

“Jonté is proof that with the right training, attitude and commitment you can succeed in this industry.”

SM TAFE’s Bentley campus has been Perth’s leading fashion design institution for over 40 years and in that time has built a reputation as an industry leader.

Bentley campus is home to expert lecturers with local and international fashion experience.

SM TAFE offers a Certificate lV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising and a new Business and Merchandising Diploma (the first in WA) which teaches students fashion business skills, including an internship in a fashion business environment.
