Manage Provision of Medical Care On Board A Vessel Skill Set

This course provides the candidate with the knowledge and skills required to take charge of a medical emergency on board ship, to seek assistance from shore based medical advisers, and carry out medical procedures as directed from shore based medical advisers. The course is conducted entirely at Edith Cowan University Joondalup. Courses offer a combination of theory and practical sessions involving direct lectures from trained medical practitioners. This course meets the requirements of STCW and is AMSA approved.

This course provides the candidate with the skills and knowledge to be able to react appropriately in an emergency situation, where a casualty has been injured at sea, or is acutely ill. To use those items of first aid equipment found in ships medical outfits, which are not included in the standard first aid kit. 

This course meets the requirements of STCW as revised by Manila Amendments 2010, and is AMSA approved.

Work Safety in Confined Spaces on a Vessel Skill Set

On successful completion of this training, participants will be able to: Identify the legislative requirements applicable to entry into confined spaces in the State of Western Australia. Identify what constitutes a confined space. Understand the hazards associated with entering a confined space. Understand contaminated atmospheres. Be able to execute a Confined Space Entry (SCE) permit. Know the minimum safety requirements for entry into a confined space including risk assessment and risk control. Be able to participate in a CSE risk assessment.

Entrance requirements for apprenticeships

You must be employed in a training contract by an appropriate organisation to study an apprenticeship or traineeship. 

An apprenticeship involves full time work with an employer who provides an opportunity to learn all aspects of a trade. This is a structured program for a fixed period of time and while you learn on the job, you also attend off the job training at SM TAFE.

This certificate allows you to perform the duties or functions of Master, Chief mate or Watchkeeper deck officer on ships of any gross tonnage in any operating area.

Holding a Watchkeeper deck or Master less than 500 GT certificate of competency may allow you to receive up to 15 units credit or recognition of prior learning with continued sea service and competencies. This may potentially reduce the duration of the course up to 14 weeks.
