Scuba Dive in Open Water to a Maximum Depth of 18 Metres Skill Set

This entry level SCUBA diving course teaches beginners how to dive in a safe and enjoyable manner. Once qualified, you are able to dive to a maximum depth of 18m (60ft) with another person of similar qualification or higher.

The course is held over 4 days, including a day of dive theory and equipment familiarisation, a day of learning dive skills in a controlled environment such as a swimming pool, and 2 days of diving in the ocean (with one of these days aimed to include diving off of our diving vessel, the Maritime Image).

Candidates are expected to hold an AMSA Elements of Shipboard Safety certificate including HLTAID003 Provide First Aid prior to entry and a Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master less than 24 meters near coastal) qualification prior to entry into this qualification.

In addition to successful completion of Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Master up to 35 meters Near Coastal), the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) requires students to successfully complete each of the following to be issued with a new certificate of competency:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Meet medical and eyesight test requirements
  • Completed AMSA approved task book or have qualifying sea service
  • Long Range Operator certificate of Proficiency or equivalent
  • Pass a final assessment at an AMSA office

  • This level of qualification is currently cited as meeting some of the requirements for certification as a Master up to 35 metres Near Coastal as defined by the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D.

Gain the practical skills and knowledge to safely operate a commercial vessel of less than 24 metres in length within offshore limits.

  • This qualification is suitable for people who work as a Master Under 24M Near Coastal in the maritime industry and Command a Commercial Marine Vessel which is up to 24 meters in length. The propulsion power must be unlimited for an outboard engine or up to 500 kW for an inboard engine.
  • Vessel: inshore or as a tender or auxiliary vessel within 3 nautical miles (nm) of a parent vessel within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ)

  • 1500kw propulsion power engaged in operations up to Inshore limits (15nm).
