Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Master up to 35 metres Near Coastal)

This certificate will allow you to work as:

  • Master on commercial vessels up to 35 metres long within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
  • Master on vessels up to 80 metres long in inshore waters.
  • Chief mate or deck watchkeeper on vessels up to 80 metres long within the EEZ.

 

    2020 Dates:

    The course runs for 8 weeks, 5 days a week starting on the following dates.

    Candidates are expected to hold an AMSA Elements of Shipboard Safety certificate including HLTAID003 Provide First Aid prior to entry and a Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master less than 24 meters near coastal) qualification prior to entry into this qualification.

    In addition to successful completion of Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Master up to 35 meters Near Coastal), the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) requires students to successfully complete each of the following to be issued with a new certificate of competency:

    • Be at least 16 years old
    • Meet medical and eyesight test requirements
    • Completed AMSA approved task book or have qualifying sea service
    • Long Range Operator certificate of Proficiency or equivalent
    • Pass a final assessment at an AMSA office

    Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal)

    This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to safely operate a commercial vessel of less than 24 metres in length within offshore limits. You will learn skills in shipboard safety, marine radio operation, navigation, ship knowledge and vessel operations.

    • This qualification is suitable for people who work as a Master Under 24M Near Coastal in the maritime industry and Command a Commercial Marine Vessel which is up to 24 meters in length. The propulsion power must be unlimited for an outboard engine or up to 500 kW for an inboard engine.
    • Vessel: inshore or as a tender or auxiliary vessel within 3 nautical miles (nm) of a parent vessel within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ)

    Successful completion of this qualification will provide you with some of the requirements for certification as an Engineer Class 3 Near Coastal as defined by the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D. Certification will require achievement of the Diploma of Maritime Operations (Marine Engineering Class 3 Near Coastal), qualifying sea service and completed Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) approved task book or qualifying sea service or qualifying sea service and a workshop skill equivalent qualification, AMSA final assessment and an AMSA approved first aid certificate; people seeking certification should check with AMSA. Certification will also require either Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 Near Coastal) or a trade (as specified in NSCV Part D).
