Get a taste for working in a kitchen

Learn the skills to prepare for a career in a commercial kitchen.

This skill set will give you an introduction to working in kitchen operations in restaurants, hotels, catering facilities, clubs, pubs, cafes, coffee shops, aged care facilities, hospitals, prisons and schools.

You will learn basic food preparation and cookery skills under the supervision of experienced commercial lecturer cooks.

Entrance Requirements

All students are required to wear a uniform while working in our commercial kitchens. Please see the order form for more information, costs to be paid by students, and the list of required items below.

  • Chef's white jacket
  • Chef's Pants
  • White apron
  • Chef's white flat hat
  • Black safety shoes
  • (Knives will be provided)
Important information

Job ready skill sets are 100% free for the following eligible students:

  • People aged 15—24 years at the time of enrolment (excluding school students)
  • Secondary school-aged people who are not enrolled at school
  • People receiving the JobSeeker or JobKeeper payment
  • People and dependents of people receiving the Youth Allowance, AUSTUDY or ABSTUDY
  • People and dependents of people holding:
    -  pensioner concession card or Health Care Card; or
    - a Repatriation Health Benefits Card issued by the Department of Veterans' Affairs
  • Dependents of people who are inmates of a custodial institution

Work placement

Work placement is a requirement for this course

This course has a mandatory work placement component that all students must complete. South Metropolitan TAFE will assist students in finding a suitable work placement by working with our industry partners. Please be aware that industries and employers have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic which has meant that some work placements have been cancelled, put on hold or student places significantly reduced. While every effort is being made to work with our industry partners to secure work placements during this unprecedented time, there may be delays in students being placed. As a result of these delays some students may take longer than the expected time to complete their course. Lecturing staff will keep all students up to date, and will inform students if this may affect them and cause a delay in finishing their course.

  • After completing this course you'll be able to work in kitchen operations in restaurants, hotels, catering facilities, clubs, pubs, cafes, coffee shops, aged care facilities, hospitals, prisons and schools. You may be in charge of preparing breakfast, fast food, non-alcoholic drinks, sandwiches, appetisers, salads and hot/cold desserts. Job roles: breakfast cook, catering assistant, fast food cook, sandwich hand and take-away cook.

This course is available as an apprenticeship.

Entrance requirements for apprenticeships

You must be employed in a training contract by an appropriate organisation to study an apprenticeship or traineeship. 

An apprenticeship involves full time work with an employer who provides an opportunity to learn all aspects of a trade. This is a structured program for a fixed period of time and while you learn on the job, you also attend off the job training at SM TAFE.

Some of the benefits of an Apprenticeship are that you can:

  • Earn a wage while you train
  • Learn on the job skills combined with off the job training
  • Receive a nationally recognised qualification on successful completion
  • Start a valuable step towards a rewarding career path
