Pilot Studies

Designed for those who have the desire and ambition to become a commercial pilot, you will gain the theoretical knowledge to help prepare you for the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) written exams. Learn about different aircraft, aerodynamics, meteorology, airplane performance, navigation, flight rules, radio telephony, as well as additional training such as aviation First Aid, basic fire extinguisher training, and more.

South Metropolitan TAFE provides world-class training in Aerospace, Maritime and Logistics training. 

Our Aerospace courses are tailored specifically to give you a solid understanding of the practices and requirements of the aviation and logistics industries. Our Jandakot campus features the AeroSpace Training Centre, which includes a 1,500 square metre hangar facility that houses a variety of aircraft including South Metropolitan TAFE's very own Boeing 737.

This course is available to those who already have their Open Water Diver qualification, and are looking to increase their skills and confidence in the water.

There are no theory days nor pool days in this course.

Simply ocean diving - most of which will be made from our dive vessel, the Maritime Image.

Within the dives that you will complete as part of this course, you will also gain experience in deep diving, and night diving.

This course is offered fulltime classroom based in semester one, and offered via blended, flexible delivery in both semester one and two.  This enables remote students or students with other commitments to pursue their passion for aquaculture. Flexible delivery includes 2.5 weeks of compulsory practical classes on campus.

This course is specifically designed for those seeking an exciting career as a cabin crew member (flight attendant). This course has been developed in conjunction with commercial airlines and experienced cabin crew training managers to meet current aviation standards and will thoroughly prepare you to be successful in the airline industry.

South Metropolitan TAFE has a Boeing 737 which will be used for the majority of your practical training. The fun begins with practical exercises such as evacuating down a slide, simulated cabin fires with a smoke machine, firefighting, ditching and life raft training. You will have hands on instruction in the full-length cabin with business and economy class seating, fully operational galleys, cabin service equipment and PA system.

Graduates of this course have successfully gained employment with both regional and international airlines as cabin crew members. Students should also be fit and healthy in order to successfully complete the airlines emergency procedure training. A prerequisite for the course is the ability to swim a minimum of 50 metres, unaided and fully clothed. Students must provide a swimming certificate in order to demonstrate they meet the prerequisite and can therefore participate in the water training exercises.

This qualification forms some of the requirements for certification as a commercial pilot by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) as directed by Civil Aviation Safety Regulation (CASR) Part 61 Flight crew licensing. People seeking certification should check these requirements with CASA.

The Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence – Helicopter) requires a significant commitment from learners to enrol into this qualification in terms of the cost and also in the time and dedication required to complete the course. An apprentice Automotive Technician - Marine Light is involved in working mainly on pleasure craft with inboard or outboard motors, they can be trailer mounted and pull behind a car or moored in the river, ocean or a marina.

Gain these skills:

  • demonstrate knowledge and skills relevant to the various types of marine engines
  • adjust, test and repair engines, transmission, fuel systems, hydraulic steering systems, cooling systems, electrical systems, propellers and boat trailers
  • use testing equipment and/or refer to manufacturers' specifications and manuals - dismantle faulty assemblies, repair or replace worn or damaged parts and reassemble, adjust and test the repaired mechanism

This apprenticeship training program comprises on and off the job components, with training blocks of four weeks twice a year for 2.5 years. When the candidate returns to industry, learning is reinforced in the workplace to further develop the candidate’s skills and increase proficiency. The employer also signs off – that the candidate has undertaken tasks in the workplace.

The Integrated Rating (IR) course is an entry-level qualification to equip new entrants into the maritime industry with practical skills and knowledge in general shipboard operations of merchant ships. This course is the AMSA approved pre-sea training course required (along with the AMSA required sea service) for issuance of the AMSA Integrated Rating Certificate of Proficiency. Integrated ratings steer a vessel under the direction of the officer of the watch and work in the engine room under the direction of engineering officers. The following provides a summary of the requirements to perform duties as part of an Integrated Rating Certificate of Proficiency. This certificate is issued under Marine Order 70 (Seafarer certification) 2014 and Marine Order 73 (Ratings) 2014, made under the Navigation Act 2012, which replaces Marine Order 3 (Seagoing qualifications) 2004. This entry level SCUBA diving course teaches beginners how to dive in a safe and enjoyable manner. Once qualified, you are able to dive to a maximum depth of 18m (60ft) with another person of similar qualification or higher.

This is a fully accredited course of study and instruction for the GMDSS General Operators Certificate (GMDSS GOC), complying with National and International Standards. Our course meets the requirements of Marine Orders Part 6 (AMSA), is fully accredited by AMSA and audited annually.

The GMDSS GOC is a statutory requirement for bridge watchkeepers of sea going vessels over 300 gross tonnes, and for all persons involved in the operation of live GMDSS equipment. This course is structured on a combination of theory and practical exercises using both ‘live to air’ equipment and simulations. It is delivered by fully qualified and accredited lecturers with deck officer or radio officer experience.

Permits persons who hold a GMDSS GOC, but do not satisfy AMSA’s revalidation requirement of 12 months of GMDSS equipment use in the last 5 years, to revalidate their GOC. If you have had 12 months use of GMDSS equipment in the last 5 years, please contact AMSA directly to discuss revalidation of your GOC through them.
