This qualification is the crucial first step towards an exciting career in aquaculture. This course provides students with a range of core skills and knowledge relevant to working in the aquaculture industry. Graduates go on to further studies or working in a range on environments including onshore aquaculture facilities, offshore culture facilities and the ornamental fish industry.

Aquaculture is a fast-growing industry. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) issued a report in 2018 stating that ‘aquaculture is fastest growing food production sector worldwide’. Typical entry-level jobs for those holding Certificate II include:

  • Australian and overseas aquaculture farms
  • hatcheries and nurseries

Fremantle campus features extensive salt and freshwater aquaculture facilities, and experienced staff which offers plenty of relevant hands-on opportunities. Our staff have involved students in the culture and applied research projects of many marine and freshwater organisms over the last two decades including species such as abalone, dhufish, yellowtail kingfish, marron and barramundi.

The Diploma of Civil Construction Design prepares you for working as a designer or design para-professional who supports professional engineers. This national qualification in civil construction design provides the skills and knowledge to work on projects ranging from building structures to road design and construction management to a basic understanding of civil materials and engineering behind it. The success of our graduates is seen in their capacity to be employed the moment they graduate, and many employers find their advanced technological skills are transferable to work in related fields.

Civil construction design involves a high level of autonomy and requiring the application of significant judgement in planning and determining the selection of equipment/roles/techniques for themselves and others. They are required to develop site specific work designs to ensure the implementation of the client’s site requirements. For those of you already working in the industry, this course is delivered full time as well as part time, along with flexible learning delivery modes to support full-time workers. Learn in our on-site native bushland which acts as an outdoor classroom and dedicated purpose-built facilities which simulate real-world working environments, including a native nursery production space featuring cutting and seed production zones and large work sheds.

Facilities also include specialised sheltered nursery areas which propagate natives for ecosystem restoration and rehabilitation, under supervision of a project leader. These plants are then prepared at the on-campus nursery and greenhouse for retail sales at the Student Garden Centre Plant Sale which is open to the general public for a short time each May and November, giving students the ability to satisfy the retail skill building requirements of their horticulture course.
