When you complete the Certificate III in Automotive Refinishing Technology you'll be ready for a career in the vehicle body repair industry.

You will have the skills and knowledge to work effectively in the industry, including applying and restoring exterior paint, colour matching, preparing surfaces for refinishing, touch-up techniques, repairing panels with filler, using spray booths, rust prevention and sound deadening, and workplace safety and health.

Entrance requirements for apprenticeships

You must be employed in a training contract by an appropriate organisation to study an apprenticeship or traineeship. 

An apprenticeship involves full time work with an employer who provides an opportunity to learn all aspects of a trade. This is a structured program for a fixed period of time and while you learn on the job, you also attend off the job training at SM TAFE.

Some of the benefits of an Apprenticeship are that you can:

  • Earn a wage while you train
  • Learn on the job skills combined with off the job training
  • Receive a nationally recognised qualification on successful completion

Delivery location, important dates and study options

This course will be offered with a blended, flexible delivery model to enable social distancing measures to be undertaken during the COVID-19 pandemic. This approach may include a mix of online and classroom based delivery, as well as practical and work experience placements. Our lecturers have diverse industry backgrounds including international licensed aircraft maintenance engineers, airline transport pilots, airport managers, flight instructors, cabin crew training managers, emergency procedures instructors, RAAF maintenance supervisors, as well as military and commercial aviators and managers.

The fully equipped hangar of the AeroSpace Training Centre at Jandakot Airport has various aircraft engines, workshop stations, computer facilities, a flight simulator, and a number of aircraft including our own Boeing 737.

An apprentice Automotive Technician - Marine Light is involved in working mainly on pleasure craft with inboard or outboard motors, they can be trailer mounted and pull behind a car or moored in the river, ocean or a marina.

The Integrated Rating (IR) course is an entry-level qualification to equip new entrants into the maritime industry with practical skills and knowledge in general shipboard operations of merchant ships. This course is the AMSA approved pre-sea training course required (along with the AMSA required sea service) for issuance of the AMSA Integrated Rating Certificate of Proficiency. Integrated ratings steer a vessel under the direction of the officer of the watch and work in the engine room under the direction of engineering officers. The following provides a summary of the requirements to perform duties as part of an Integrated Rating Certificate of Proficiency.
