Sophia Noryahya
Advanced Skills Lecturer at SM TAFE
Meet Sophia Noryahya, an Advanced Skills Lecturer at SM TAFE. Sophia is an inspiring individual whose career trajectory took an unexpected turn from the vibrant world of hospitality to the rewarding realm of education and training.
Her professional journey began in Singapore's lively Events Management scene. Upon relocating to Perth, she assumed the role of Assistant Food and Beverage Manager at the Duxton Hotel Perth, luxury accommodation in central Perth. It was during her time there that Sophia unearthed her passion for training while overseeing opportunities in customer service. Witnessing the positive impact of training on individuals' career progression, she decided to pivot towards this fulfilling aspect of her role.
Despite the allure of a managerial role in hospitality, Sophia chose to pursue her passion for training — a decision supported by her manager who recognised her natural strengths. This choice led Sophia to work at Perth Institute of WA (PIWA) and later, at Stanley College, before finding her professional home at SM TAFE where she has dedicated the past 11 years.
Sophia's qualifications include a Bachelor in Hotel Management and the completion of the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Reflecting on her journey, Sophia underscores the essential role of the certificate in facilitating her transition from industry to a training role. She highlights the comprehensive preparation and one-on-one coaching provided during the course, making it an essential step for those aspiring to become trainers and assessors.
"The TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment thoroughly prepares you for a trainer/assessor role. It is a specialised area of study, and you will receive one-on-one coaching from your lecturer," affirms Sophia.
For those contemplating this path, Sophia advises gaining an understanding of the commitment involved, including an intermediate level of technology skills. She encourages potential students to acquire these skills before embarking on the course.
According to Sophia, the rewards of being a lecturer extend far beyond the classroom.
"You can positively influence individuals' lives, pass on your knowledge, and help students create their own knowledge base. It's about giving them the freedom to think creatively." The TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment opens doors to various job roles, including positions in TAFEs, RTOs, or Learning and Development teams within organisations.
The course can be completed in 6 months with a one-day-a-week option, or in 10 months with evening classes, and is now available at SM TAFE campuses including Bentley, Rockingham and Armadale.
As you contemplate a career change, remember Sophia's advice: understand the role, find a mentor, and be prepared for the commitment. The journey may be challenging, but the rewards are immeasurable. Unlock your potential - consider the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and embark on a transformative journey like Sophia's.
