International student award changes career landscape

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

In the decades since South Metropolitan TAFE (SM TAFE) has awarded its International Student of the Year Award, the prize for studies during 2020 is arguably the most hard earned.

Shalynn Buss of Lathlain, who came to Australia from Canada, claimed the coveted prize at a presentation this week after overcoming the added challenge of being kept apart from overseas family and friends for more than two years due to the pandemic and travel restrictions.

Shalynn has completed a Diploma of Event Management(opens in a new tab) at SM TAFE.
SM TAFE’s Student Awards recognise the achievements of students from across the college, including winners in the categories Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year, Apprentice of the Year, Trainee of the Year, Vocational Student of the Year, VET Secondary Student of the Year, and the Cultural Diversity Training Award.

Once an aspiring lawyer, Shalynn moved to Perth in early 2019 to become an au pair and immerse herself in the Australian lifestyle. It was during earlier university studies that an event-related elective sparked her interest in event management studies. She now plans to open her own business focusing on wedding planning.
Shalynn was full of praise for her course and lecturers.

“The course provided a perfect-mix of theory and practical work, leading to valuable experience and employment opportunities at the conclusion of the course,” she said.
“I have been amazed by my professional, attentive, helpful lecturers and their dedication to teaching their students the best industry practices.

“I do not believe I would be able to acquire this education level elsewhere — I am a hands-on learner, and it drives me to do my best when I am continuously having to prove my abilities during real events and working with actual business owners to meet deadlines and maintain levels of quality service.

“I want international students to know that you shouldn’t be scared to follow your dreams in a new country.”
SM TAFE Executive Director Training Services and panel chair Julia Burns said Shalynn’s study commitment and passion for the industry made her a worthy recipient of International Student of the Year.

“Shalynn has displayed commitment to her studies and shown real leadership by assisting her fellow students and colleagues at SM TAFE and in the workplace,” he said.
SM TAFE offers a range of events courses, from a Certificate III in Events through to the Diploma of Event Management(opens in a new tab)
