Hospitality studies lead to coveted training award

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

For Sauda Niyogwizera, of Harrisdale, an Asian Food Day at school was the start of a culinary journey that culminated in her being named the South Metropolitan TAFE (SM TAFE) Culturally Diverse Student of the Year.

SM TAFE’s Student Awards recognise the achievements of students from across the college, including winners in the categories Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year, Apprentice of the Year, Trainee of the Year, International Student of the Year, Vocational Student of the Year and the VET Secondary Student of the Year award.

Since Sauda, who came to Australia from Burundi more than a decade ago, was introduced to Asian cuisine at school, she has completed a Certificate III and Certificate IV in Asian Cookery and more recently a Diploma of Hospitality Management (opens in a new tab) that has given her additional management skill sets.

She is planning to continue her current studies in Training and Assessment with a view to becoming an educator.
“I love to share my knowledge and skills with others whenever an opportunity arises,” Sauda said.
Sauda applies her cookery skills within her community, helping out at weddings and gatherings preparing meals and sharing her Asian cookery knowledge with people from her community.

“It’s a huge hit when I get to help people learn how to prepare Asian dishes.”
SM TAFE Executive Director Training Services and panel chair Carole Little said Sauda is to be commended for using her sense of humour and empathy when mentoring other students.
