Stacey engineers her own success

Stacey Boothman has won the SM TAFE Apprentice of the Year Student of the Year Award.

The awards recognise the achievements of students from across SM TAFE, as well as five major award winners in the categories Apprentice of the Year, International Student of the Year, Vocational Student of the Year, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year and the Cultural Diversity Training Award.

As part of a four-year mechanical fitter apprenticeship with Alcoa Kwinana, Stacey has completed a Certificate III and almost finished her Certificate IV in Mechanical Fitting and is in the final stages of completing her Diploma of Engineering – Advanced Trade at SM TAFE Rockingham.

Stacey’s love for engineering started at a young age while spending time with her dad, an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.

“I always loved pulling things apart at my dad’s business to see how they worked,” Stacey said.

Stacey was recognised by her lecturers for being a role model to her fellow students and her dedication to continuous improvement.

“Being trained by a variety of knowledgeable lecturers has given me a broad range of learning experiences and expertise to gain a diverse base of knowledge.

“I hope to finish my Diploma of Engineering and work in my field continually growing my experience and contributing to the industry.

“Eventually I would love to give back to future generations of apprentices and become a lecturer to pass on the knowledge I will pick up in my years of on the job training.”

SM TAFE Portfolio Manager Oil and Gas Process Engineering and panel chair Ty Theodore said Stacey’s dedication to her apprenticeship, training and career is commendable.

“Stacey is always looking at ways to continuously improve her education and is supportive and constructive with her opinions - this is exactly what we are looking for in our apprentice of the year,” said Mr Theodore.

SM TAFE offers a wide range of engineering qualifications across the areas of Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Mechatronics and Technical engineering.
