Core requirements
Communication skills
- Read and comprehend safety signs, labels and written instructions
- Able to listen, understand and follow verbal instructions accurately
- Communicate clearly with supervisors or team members
- Able to record and share information (e.g., feeding notes, observations)
Observational skills
- Attention to detail when performing tasks
- Ability to monitor routine conditions (e.g., water quality)
- Able to observe and notice changes in animal behaviour
Technical / motor skills
- Able to use hands or aids effectively for tasks such as scooping, netting or feeding
- Able to navigate uneven surfaces and variable work environments
- Comfortable handling basic tools or equipment (nets, buckets, hoses, etc.)
- Can follow step-by-step processes for cleaning, feeding or simple maintenance
Cognitive/intellectual skills
- Literacy (reading, writing, comprehension)
- Numeracy (counting, measuring, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
- Able to understand and remember simple procedures
- Capable of troubleshooting and problem-solving
- Willingness to learn related basic science concepts (biology)
Behavioural/social skills
- Positive attitude and readiness to learn new, hands-on skills
- Respect for safety requirements, workplace rules and animal welfare
- Willingness to work cooperatively with others in shared tasks
- Dependability - arriving on time, completing tasks, and following instructions
- Ability to stay calm and be responsible in practical or outdoor work environments
Physical demands
- Comfortable handling aquatic animals
- Basic stamina for repetitive or physically active work
- Comfortable working around water and wet conditions
