Advancing and progressing to the next semester

Are you thinking of studying with us again next semester and completing a new qualification?

Or do you still have units within your current qualification to complete?

If you do please read the below information carefully and follow the process that best applies to you.

Are you advancing?

Advancing students have completed their full qualification (for example, Certificate III) and are advancing to the next qualification in that pathway (for example, Certificate IV).

To advance you need to apply online to TAFE Admissions. Those who applied by the application date will have their place in the course assessed with other applicants choosing to study in the same intake who also made an application by the applications close date. Be sure to include your current study in your application, as the assessment team will see you are advancing and this will enhance your chances to be accepted into your next qualification.

Don't delay! Even if you haven't completed your current units and are yet to learn your results, you need to apply as early as possible to have your application considered along with other applicants not studying right now. 

Those who apply after the applications close date will be considered as Expression of Interest for remaining places after the first eligible applicant lists have been exhausted.

International students: please go to our 'Are you progressing' section below - the advancing process does not apply to you.

Are you progressing (continuing)?

Progressing students have completed at least one semester of units in their current qualification (for example, Diploma - Semester 1) and are progressing to the next semester of units in the same qualification (for example, Diploma - Semester 2).

To progress (continue) your studies you will need to do one of two things before next semester:

  • Pay in full by credit card, or finalise your VET Student Loan application: call our Enrolment Call Centre or look out for a reminder email from us.
  • Continue or start a payment plan: use our online form to start the process.

You won’t need additional paperwork and we will already have your study plan ready in our system to enrol you into your next units. 

Don't delay! Places in all courses can fill quickly. Avoid disappointment and enrol in your next units as soon as you can.

Are you a progressing (continuing) apprentice?

Progressing apprentices have completed one block of units in a semester in their current qualification and are progressing to their next block of units in the next semester.

To progress you need to check the Call Up Letter you and your employer will receive from our Apprenticeships office. The letter will include your classes and timetables. On your first day of class visit our customer service staff to confirm your enrolment. Make sure you bring with you your USI, concession card, and be ready to make a payment plan or pay upfront (if your employer is not paying your fees).

What do I do towards the end of Semester, once I have passed all my current units for my qualification and I want to progress (continue) to my next semester of units within the same qualification?

To progress (continue) you will need to pay in full or finalise your VET Student Loan by phone, make a payment plan, or pay by cash/EFTPOS on campus. 

Payment of your next semester of units needs to be paid in full by cash, EFTPOS or credit card. Payment plans with a $100 deposit can be set up if you cannot pay your fees in full at the time of enrolment. 
   

What do I do towards the end of Semester, once I have completed all my units for my qualification and I want to advance to the next qualification?

Once applications open (usually in September and April) you must apply online to advance to the next qualification through TAFE Admissions. On completion of your online application you will receive a ‘Reference Number’ which you will need to write down and keep. TAFE Admissions will email you any successful competitive or non-competitive offers. You will need to accept your offer by attending the SM TAFE enrolment days to pay for your fees and provide your evidence.  

Payment of your new units needs to be paid in full by cash, EFTPOS or credit card.  Payment plans with a $100 deposit can be set up if you cannot pay your fees in full at the time of enrolment. 
  

What do I do if I have finished all my units for my qualification and I have failed a unit/s and I need to repeat the unit/s?  

To progress (continue) you will need to pay in full by phone, make a payment plan, or come to campus for any other payment type. It may be possible to advance to your next qualification and repeat the failed unit(s) at the same time.
  

Who do I contact if my Employer and I have not yet received my ‘Call up Letter’ with my TAFE class dates and schedules for my next block of units for my apprenticeship?

If you have not received your Call Up letter, you can contact us via phone on 1800 001 001 and ask for the Apprenticeships Office and they will be able to provide you with another copy of your letter. 
 

Do I have to enrol into my next semester of units if I am still in the same qualification (example: Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery)?

Yes, to progress (continue) you will need to pay in full by Master Card or Visa by phone, make a payment plan or pay in cash/EFTPOS. 

 

I have finished my qualification (example: Certificate III in Fitness) and I want to enrol in the next qualification (example: Certificate IV in Sport Development). What do I do?

I have just finished all my units for my current qualification and I have outstanding fees that I need to pay. How do I pay my outstanding fees and can I pay the debt when I enrol in my next qualification?

No, if you have an outstanding debt you will be required to pay all of the outstanding debt prior to new enrolment confirmation, you cannot begin a fee payment arrangement for an outstanding debt. Contact us on 1800 001 001 from Monday to Friday and speak to our Customer Service staff to pay by credit card in full over the phone. Only Visa and MasterCard are accepted. Alternatively, visit a campus from Monday to Friday to pay in cash or EFTPOS to enable confirmation of your enrolment.
