Service Type A Gas Appliances skill set

This course will train and assess students in the skills and knowledge required to competently service Type A gas appliances.

Students completing this course can apply to Energy Safety WA to have 'Servicing' endorsed on their G Class permit.

  • characteristics of conversion from one gas type to another 
  • classification of appliances and identification of related components 
  • electrical safety, including isolation procedures and requisite precautions 
  • gas appliance regulators 
  • gas appliance thermostats 
  • gas safety, including:
  • combustion characteristics and effects 
  • isolation procedures 
  • job safety analysis (JSA) and safe work method statements (SWMS) 
  • operation of flame failure systems used in Type A gas appliances

Attendance in class

This course is equivalent to 5 days a week across 2 weeks from 7.45am - 4.15pm. 

At home study

Students will need to conduct self-directed computer based training using Blackboard.

Work placement

Work placement is not a requirement of this course.

What you need for your first day of class

On your first day you should bring your SM TAFE confirmation enrolment receipt, your student ID, stationery (a pen and notepad and wear enclosed footwear and equipment from orientation booklet lists). An G class gas permit is a requirement of this course.

Uniforms and workwear requirements

  • Steel cap boots

Applicants must hold a G Class gas permit from Energy Safety WA.
