Gain the skills and knowledge to become a commercial helicopter pilot. Learn how to perform normal and emergency commercial pilot duties to work in commercial or defence aviation flight operations.

Flight crew duties include applying technical and non-technical aviation skills and knowledge to a wide range of air transport operations, including passenger, charter and cargo operations.

Individuals working at this level will apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, judgement and defined responsibility in known or changing contexts and within broad but established parameters.

This qualification forms some of the requirements for certification as a commercial pilot by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) as directed by Civil Aviation Safety Regulation (CASR) Part 61 Flight crew licensing. People seeking certification should check these requirements with CASA.

The Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence – Helicopter) requires a significant commitment from learners to enrol into this qualification in terms of the cost and also in the time and dedication required to complete the course. As such, South Metropolitan TAFE wants to ensure that the right candidates are enrolled in this course that are committed and are fully informed regarding the career outcome.

School Leaver Non-School Leaver AQF
Completion of WACE General or ATAR (Minimum C Grades) or equivalent Completion of WACE General or ATAR or equivalent (minimum C Grades) Certificate III

Prior to entry into this qualification, applicants must:

  • Be over the age of 18 years to commence Commercial Pilot Training
  • Hold a current Class 1 medical or equivalent in accordance with CASA licencing requirements
  • Must hold a current Aviation Security Identification (ASIC)
  • Must have completed the CASA Aviation English assessment
  • Hold a Unique Student Identifier number
  • Must attend a South Metropolitan TAFE information briefing session
  • Undertake two hours in a VH registered aircraft with a CASA approved flight training provider to ensure that applicants can meet the physiological and psychological demands required for successful completion of the course and address and identify issues (such as airsickness or claustrophobia) so that applicants can be aware of flight training requirements and be well informed about the nature of study and work in this industry
  • Must achieve a pass grade in the pre-entry aptitude assessment

Information relating to the dates and times of the pre-entry assessment and briefing sessions will be sent on application.

Important information

The completion of this qualification will require the accumulation of flight time.  

This will be conducted by Rotorwest Pty Ltd (Heliwest) at Jandakot Airport.
