When you finish the Certificate IV in Spoken and Written English for Further Study, your English skills will be suitable for studying a Diploma or entering Murdoch or Curtin University.

The Certificate IV in Spoken and Written English for Further Study  meets appropriate entry requirements into Murdoch University undergraduate degrees with minimum entry of IELTS Academic score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0.  

You will learn:

  • persuasive writing
  • writing scientific reports
  • spoken and written presentations
  • listening and writing notes
  • learning strategies.

You will be enrolled in the correct level based on your English knowledge.

Please note Carlisle campus classes are held Tuesday nights only.

Attendance in class

This course is equivalent to 4 days 1 morning per week across one semester.

At-home study

As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 10 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, assignment preparation, and research.

You will need to have the basic technical requirements for at-home study. If you don’t have access to a computer and WiFi at home, we recommend using our library computers during library hours.  Access to Office 365 and Blackboard is preferable. 

Work placement

Work placement is not a requirement for this course.

What you need for your first day of class

On your first day you should bring your SM TAFE confirmation enrolment receipt, your student ID, stationery (pen, exercise book, and file).

The Certificates in Spoken and Written English assist adults with low level English skills from non-English speaking backgrounds who want to develop the language and literacy skills required to undertake further education and training, seek and maintain employment, and participate in the community.

The Certificate IV in Spoken and Written English for Further Study meets appropriate entry requirements into:

  • Murdoch University undergraduate degrees with minimum entry of IELTS Academic score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0. 
  • Curtin University will accept the successful completion of Certificate IV Spoken and Written English for Further Study as meeting the Curtin English requirement for courses requiring an IELTS of 6.5 with no individual band of less than 6.0.
