Does your career dream involve building a talent that could take you all over the world? This course will give you job ready skills to become a bar attendant, barista, waiter, housekeeper or gaming attendant working in exciting sectors such as food and beverage, and travel and tourism. 

Hospitality is a service industry where you could be preparing and serving customers their favourite coffee at a local cafe, taking an order at a fine-dining restaurant, welcoming guests to a luxury hotel or working amongst the action of a casino.

Be guided by our lecturers who are industry professionals and learn skills such as how to provide outstanding customer service, prepare hot and cold beverages as well as responsible service of alcohol and how to work effectively in a team.

This course will kick-start your career in hospitality and give you a taste of the industry, providing a pathway to working in restaurants, hotels, clubs, pubs, cafes and casinos. If you’re already enjoying a role in hospitality, the course will give you a formally nationally recognised qualification and help grow your current knowledge.

Study in specialised facilities

Learn in the real-life setting of our award-winning Bentley Pines Training Restaurant. which provides a live, interactive training environment at SM TAFE’s Bentley campus. Students can gain hands-on experience serving and preparing food for members of the public, as well as showcasing their skills planning a menu and advertising special events to the community. 

Opened in early 2023, the purpose-built training facility Saltbush Training Restaurant at Mandurah campus provides a real-life setting for students to build their practical skills and become workplace ready. The restaurant is part of the Mandurah Hospitality and Tourism Training Centre which delivers simulated training in commercial cookery, tourism and event management. The Centre also features two well-equipped training kitchens and a production kitchen for hands-on training. The opening of Saltbush Training Restaurant marks an exciting new chapter for cookery and hospitality training in the Mandurah and Peel region! Half-price

This qualification is directly aligned with priority industry areas where the jobs are today, and into the future. As part of the state government Lower fees, local skills initiative, from 1 January 2020 through to 31 December 2025 you'll only pay half the course fees, capped for each year at $1,200; or $400 (plus resource fee) if you're aged 15—24 or eligible for a concession. Find out more

Attendance in class

This course is equivalent to 2-3 days per week across one semester.

At-home study

As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete an additional 3-5 hours of study each week outside of class hours, including private study, assignment preparation, and research.

You will need to have the basic technical requirements for at-home study. If you don’t have access to a computer and WiFi at home, we recommend using our library computers during library hours.

Work placement

Approximately 75 hours of work placement is mandatory for completion of this course. This will involve your attendance at a workplace 1 day per week for 15 weeks during the program depending on the host employer and availability.

What you need for your first day of class

On your first day you should bring your SM TAFE confirmation enrolment receipt, your student ID and stationery (pen, pencil, exercise book and USB). Students are welcome to bring in their own laptop or tablet.

In addition, the following uniform (as discussed at your enrolment meeting) is required:

  • 1 x black tailored pants (no jeans, chinos or leggings)
  • 1 x long sleeve white business shirt
  • black business socks
  • black leather enclosed non slip shoes (no sneakers, heels or open toed shoes)
