Malicious cyber activity is growing worldwide, driving a dramatic increase in demand for cyber security solutions. Over the next decade the Australian cyber security industry is forecast to almost triple in size. This growth translates into an additional 11,000 jobs.

Be the one of the first in WA to study a para professional qualification designed to deliver job-ready skills leading to specialisation as a cyber security expert. Graduates will have the knowledge and skills that will equip them to provide a comprehensive set of technical services beyond networking!

Full-time attendance is equivalent to three days a week. 

Is this course right for you?

To be successful in this course it is recommended that you complete the Certificate IV in Cyber Security (22334VIC) or possess the following skills before you commence; Able to; undertake basic to intermediate coding in Python, basic networking and penetration testing, perform basic security analysis, implement authentication and encryption. Be familiar with these technologies in; Kali Linux, Cisco IOS, Wireshark, Splunk, Firewalls, Active Directory. Still not sure if this course is right for you? Specialist facilities on-campus

Our state-of-the-art Training Cyber Security Operations Centre (TCSOC) provides a secure training environment designed to simulate realistic cyber-attacks relating to attack, defence and monitoring. The TCSOC provides a multi-campus centre based in Murdoch with ‘nodes’ at Thornlie and Rockingham campuses in order for all IT students to experience this leading edge training.

The Murdoch campus is centrally located to the Murdoch health and knowledge precinct, making it the ideal location for cyber security training. South Metropolitan TAFE has networks with industry associations such as the Australian Computer Society, Australian Information Security Association and Health Informatics Society of Australia, ensuring our students have access to industry expertise and networking opportunities.

This qualification is a progression pathway for students who have studied the Certificate IV in Cyber Security (22334VIC) or is an ideal advanced qualification for those who have had two year's cyber security industry experience. For those who have CISCO certification, or have studied at Diploma level in Networking, Computer Systems Engineering, or Electronics and Communications, or who have studied a Computer Science bachelor degree or higher qualification, the Advanced Diploma can broaden your skills and expertise for the growing job market in cyber security. Half-price

This qualification is directly aligned with priority industry areas where the jobs are today, and into the future. As part of the state government Lower fees, local skills initiative, from 1 January 2020 through to 31 December 2025 you'll only pay half the course fees, capped at $1,200; or $400 (plus resource fee) if you're aged 15—24 or eligible for a concession. Find out more

Attendance in class

This course is equivalent to 3 days per week across two semesters.

At-home study

As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete 25% extra of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, assignment preparation, and research.

You will need to have the basic technical requirements for at-home study. If you don’t have access to a computer and WiFi at home, we recommend using our library computers during library hours.

Work placement

There is no work placement required for this course.

What you need for your first day of class

On your first day you should bring your SM TAFE confirmation enrolment receipt, your student ID, stationery (pen, exercise book).

All students will need to supply 1 Terabyte (1 TB) USB 3.0 external drive for storing software images and virtual machine files that are too large for storing on cloud storage.

In addition, the following uniform is required to be worn at all classes:

  • Normal business/computing office attire applies.
