Volunteer tutors helping adults to read

ReadWriteNow.pngThe team of volunteers at Read Write Now offer free, personalised help for adults who want to improve their reading, writing, maths, study or basic computer skills.

The Read Write Now program aims to improve the literacy of adults who have left the school system and have inadequate literacy for everyday life demands. Help is available to improve reading, writing, maths, study or basic computer skills. Plus: Read Write Now can help with your TAFE application!

Get started

When you call 1800 018 802, you will be put in touch with a Coordinator near you. After catching up for a chat to see how they can help, you will be matched up with a tutor, who you will work with for about an hour and a half each week. The sessions are private, friendly and free.

The Read Write Now program is for adults aged 18 years and over. Priority is given to people who fell through the cracks in the school system and have inadequate literacy. Adults from overseas need to be permanent residents of Australia with reasonable spoken English. You do not have to be a student at SM TAFE to get help from Read Write Now.

How does it work?

Your Read Write Now tutor will work closely with you on your goals and interests to ensure you get the most out of your sessions, based on your goals. Many students have a goal relating to a job or to a course they are studying and they bring paperwork from their job or their course notes to sessions. The tutor plans a lesson using these materials to help build reading and writing skills.

At the end of the session you will be given some work to take with you so you can practise during the week. Read Write Now is not a course, there are no set textbooks and no exams.

Become a volunteer

Are you interested in sharing your love of reading and writing? Do you have skills or knowledge that could help others?

Read Write Now is looking for volunteers to support adult learners who want to improve their reading, writing, basic numeracy and/or IT skills. Students come from all walks of life, so they need tutors from all walks of life. No prior teaching experience is needed as training is provided. Your relationship with your student is what matters most so tutors who are good communicators, non-judgmental, not 'set in their ways', have good literacy skills to share and are willing to work in a two-way learning partnership are ideal.

Due to the majority of students being over 25 years of age, tutors who are 22 years and older are preferred. Feedback from students is that having a tutor older than them with some life experience assists them to look beyond short-term goals and see wider opportunities in their own lives.

All Read Write Now tutors participate in a stimulating and enjoyable training program and receive ongoing training and support from the program. Please note this is a Western Australian program. Apply now.
