As part of the final stage of their training, electrical apprentices must complete a capstone assessment to demonstrate they have achieved the ‘critical items’ outlined in the Essential Capabilities List.
This requirement applies to apprentices enrolled in the UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician, who will complete UEEEL0039 as their capstone unit.
This unit can only be completed after 100% successful completion of on-the-job training and within three months of the end of the training contract. This will be the final unit for completion before gaining their qualification.
The capstone program is delivered in two parts:
- Part One: Up-Front Knowledge Portfolio
- Part Two: Knowledge, Design, and Practical Assessments
Capstone Part One - Up Front Knowledge Portfolio
An initial two days of TAFE training will be dedicated to completing the required knowledge portfolio for Capstone (UEEEL0039).
This will take place after you’ve completed UEEEL0012 – Install low voltage wiring, appliances, switchgear and associated accessories, at a time scheduled by South Metropolitan TAFE.
Students will need to complete 235 questions across 12 test areas. All questions must be answered 100% correctly to pass this online portfolio and before any call-ups for the practical Capstone assessments are issued.
All students are required to attend these sessions and complete the knowledge portfolio on-site, with support from our lecturers.
Important information
- Four attempts per test area are allowed
- Work can be saved and returned to at a later time
- Students have access to the Knowledge Portfolio Resource Book and may also use other standards and resources available
- This is not a closed-book assessment
- No external electronic devices will be allowed in the room to maintain the security and integrity of the quizzes
- Quizzes will be completed on South Metropolitan TAFE-supplied computers
Capstone (Electricians) Part Two – Knowledge, Design and Practical Assessments
Once the 12 Knowledge Portfolio tasks are completed with 100% accuracy, students can proceed to the Capstone face-to-face assessments.
If the portfolio is not completed by Tuesday afternoon, students will be required to complete it at a later date. Capstone will not be signed off until all portfolio questions are completed correctly.
The Capstone Final Assessment is a ten (10) day program. The class will be split into two groups for practical installation assessments, as follows:
| Day | Task | Time (staggered start/finish times) |
| Monday | Online Portfolio | 8:00am - 16:30 (8 hrs) |

Students can resit components of the assessments if the first attempt is unsuccessful. Resits will be completed from Tuesday afternoon of the second week onwards.
Students who are unsuccessful after two attempts at any theory assessment must re-enrol in the relevant unit and retake only the necessary Capstone assessments at a later time.
Sample Testing
Each student will test their board as part of the installation assessment. Once testing has been completed, the assessor will request specific tests under direct supervision to demonstrate correct testing procedures. The assessor will advise on the day which circuits and tests are to be completed.
Important Information
Only one attempt at each installation assessment will be allowed. If a second attempt is needed, the student will be re-enrolled in the unit.
A re-enrol/resit in the unit does not require all assessments to be completed again, only the individual exam or portion of the exam that was completed incorrectly. Re-enrol/resit rules applicable to each exam are:
- Portfolio - only the quizzes not completed correctly
- Knowledge - only the individual questions not completed correctly
- Maximum Demand - entire exam with different specifications
- Fault Finding - entire exam with different faults
- Installation - Portion or portions of the exam not completed correctly, Example: failed isolation portion but passed build and testing: only resit isolation. Failed build portion, but passed isolation: rebuild and retest the board. Failed testing, but passed build and isolation: redo testing only.
