Apprenticeships and traineeships

Our industry recognised apprenticeship and traineeship programs combine on-the-job work experience with practical education, training and development. Apprenticeships and traineeships are a great way to develop your skills, learn all aspects of a trade or industry and get paid at the same time. They involve planned learning over a period agreed by you, your employer and us.

A large number of apprenticeships and traineeships are also available to part-time workers.
We have a long history of working with employers across a broad range of industries, to support apprenticeships and trainees and can include:

  • National recognition for prior qualifications attained.
  • Recognition of prior learning (RPL).
  • Competency based on-the-job training and assessment.
  • Self-paced learning.
  • Project or enterprise-based learning and assessment.
  • Intensive support programs including off-the-job training as required.

To become an apprentice or trainee, you need to be employed and registered as an apprentice or trainee with a training contract.

Our Jobs and Skills Centres team is available to assist you become apprenticeship or traineeship ready.

If you're an employer, visit the Apprenticeships and traineeships page for employers.

Pre-apprenticeships

Pre-apprenticeships give you the basic skills to use the tools of the industry and the vital safety skills to work on the job. Work placement allows you to sample what working in the industry is like and build a relationship with an employer at the same time. This and other networking opportunities via our lecturers often lead to offers of employment for graduates of pre-apprenticeships. Pre-apprenticeship courses take about six to nine months and the skills you gain may shorten the term of a subsequent apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships

Apprentices enter into a contract with an employer who teaches all aspects of a trade. These are structured programs where you learn on-the-job and attend off-the-job training, either one-day-a-week or via block release. An apprenticeship leads to a nationally recognised trade qualification and is offered full-time, part-time and school-based. The length depends on the employment but will range from three to four years.

Traineeships

Trainees enter into a contract with an employer to gain hands-on skills and work experience while earning a wage. Traineeships are usually in non-trade related areas and last for 12 months or more. Traineeships may be workplace based or include both off and on-the-job training, leading to a nationally recognised qualification. They are available full-time, part-time, and school-based. The term of a traineeship will depend on the employment type and will range from 12 months to three years for full-time employment.

To find out how to become an apprentice or trainee, visit our applications page.
