Still at school

Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VET in Schools or VETiS) Pathways makes school more interesting and relevant to you while kick starting your career with recognised qualifications. Graduate with your Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and have the choice to continue in your TAFE studies or decide to move into a higher education course.

VETiS Pathways are the perfect introduction into the world of work. You will learn practical skills in year 11 and 12 while gaining an insight into the needs of the workplace. You will attend one of our South Metropolitan TAFE campuses one or two days a week and for the rest of the week participate in your normal school program where you will still benefit from the educational and social support provided by your school.

Success in your program can lead to employment or give you a head start in other nationally recognised qualifications. Some higher level qualifications will offer you pathways into higher education and university studies.

South Metropolitan TAFE offers a range of pathways between qualifications, increasing your options to continue your education and training. Our strong relationships with Curtin University, Edith Cowan University and Murdoch University provide students with seamless pathways towards higher qualifications.

Information such as delivery locations, costs and uniform requirements are included in the table below to assist schools, teachers, parents and students in making the best choices for each individual.

Fees and charges

Secondary school students undertaking VETiS courses as part of their secondary education including pre-apprenticeships in schools courses are exempt from tuition, resource and enrolment fees. However depending on the chosen course students may be required to purchase a uniform, protective equipment, text books or trade equipment/tools.

Attendance

Students are responsible for ensuring that they attend all scheduled classes. Attendance will be recorded and any absences are reported to the school. The VET Coordinator at your school will be contacted to discuss the appropriateness of a student continuing if there are  repeated absences. Students are required to inform their lecturer in advance if they will be absent from any scheduled classes. Poor attendance may mean withdrawal from the course.

Dress code

Students are not required to wear their school uniform to their course but they are expected to dress appropriately. Where special or protective clothing and/or footwear is required, it must be worn without exception. Students who forget to bring their protective clothing will be excluded from the campus workshops/classes and the school informed.

How do students apply?

VETiS applications for 2019 close Friday 31 August 2018.

The first step is to decide what you want to study. Choose between our profile programs,  Pre-apprenticeship in School (PAiS) programs, Fee for Service, and Education Support Programs using the headings below. Take note of the different requirements for each type of program and the full name and national code of the course.  VETiS courses are extremely competitive and it is recommended that as much evidence as possible is provided to support the application. These documents must be uploaded when applying through our online application system.

To complete the application students will require their:

  • School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) number (this can be found on your school report or speak with your VET in Schools Coordinator
  • A Unique Student Identifier (USI) - to obtain this they will need to visit usi.gov.au
  • Parent/guardian email address and mobile phone number
  • Most recent school report in an electronic format i.e. PDF
  • Resume, references and/or certificates which will help support their application

Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation email, along with your parent/guardian, and in some cases schools will receive notification via their VET Coordinator.

When applications have closed, we will contact the school to ask to endorse and support the application before the selection process begins. For more information, please contact your school VET coordinator.

Pre-Apprenticeship in School (PAIS) programs

If you're in year 11 or 12, the PAiS program involves attending school, completing Certificate II Pre-Apprenticeship training at South Metropolitan TAFE, and completing work placements with at least two employers.

Graduate Year 12 with your WACE, a pre-apprenticeship in your chosen field and be a step ahead of others looking for apprenticeships. There is no doubt employers look favourably at the candidate who already has a proven track record of study, demonstrated the capacity to apply themselves to a formal TAFE course and can understand the practices and terminology associated with the trade in question.

Students who wish to apply for these courses can apply through our online application process.

South Metropolitan TAFE has a limited number of fee-for-service courses on offer in 2019 and 2020.

These courses have been designed to provide more variety to students. The courses in this section are either not on our funded list of courses or would be suitable for students that have already completed a one year qualification, and would like to continue studying with South Metropolitan TAFE for another year. Please note: Course commencement is subject to sufficient enrolment numbers.

Each course has a fee attached and this fee would need to be paid by the student at the commencement of study. The invoice will be sent to the school to process.

Students who wish to apply for these courses can apply through our on line application process.

South Metropolitan TAFE continues its commitment to providing options for all school-aged students including those attending education support centres or undertaking education support courses. We provide learning environments that welcome students of all abilities and promotes inclusiveness. Students with disabilities and a diverse range of learning needs can attend South Metropolitan TAFE alongside their peers. The courses outlined over the following pages have been selected as suitable for education support students.

When considering South Metropolitan TAFE courses, it is important to consider all the requirements before applying. Schools are expected to send education assistants with students who require in-classroom support at school. If you are unsure about the suitability of a course please discuss with your school VET coordinator.

Please note: these courses have a different application process to our Profile, Pre-Apprenticeship in School (PAiS) and Fee for Service programs.
