AS2980 Welder Qualification Level 1

This course is for welders with some welding experience in all position welding who are seeking verification of their skills. .

  • Testing standard AS2980-2007 - Qualification of welders for fusion welding of steel.
  • Weld standard AS1554.1-2004 - Structural Steel welding; Category General Purpose (GP).

This is a 10 week course 30Hrs, one process all Mild Steel Plate (Pipe can be done but may cost extra). All welds undergo visual and destructive testing to Australian Standards; assessments are conducted by qualified assessor and a co-assessor

Note: Radiographic testing (X-ray) is available on request at additional cost.

Weld positions covered;

  • 2F (Horizontal Fillet)
  • 2G (Horizontal Butt) weld from one side (full penetration) or weld from both sides
  • 3G (Vertical up Butt) weld from one side (full penetration) or weld from both sides
  • 4G (Overhead Butt) weld from one side (full penetration) or weld from both sides

Successful completion of all four welds qualifies for all positions

Outcome; Welder qualification to an industry recognised standard, a certificate is issued detailing weld type and position passed (this is a non-endorsed course).

Optional National Qualification; participants seeking national recognised qualifications at certificate III or IV level may choose at additional cost to enrol in the relevant endorsed unit of competency. This requires the candidate to attend additional training and sit theoretical examination. Classes usually run on a Monday or Wednesday evening.

  • MEM05050B - Perform Routine Gas Metal Arc Welding
  • MEM05051A - Select welding processes
  • MEM05052A - Apply safe welding practices
  • MEM12023A - Perform engineering measurements
  • MEM18001C - Use hand tools
  • MEM18002B - Use power tools/ hand held operation

It is recommended that you have had at least three years all position welding experience in your chosen possess to a general purpose level and are currently using this process on a regular basis. For national endorsed qualifications the candidate must also meet the pathway requirements for their chosen welding process.
