Applied Engineering Mathematics

State ID: SMT0072

Students will gain an understanding of using mathematics as a tool to analyse practical problems. This course will also provide a solid foundation for physics and other disciplines.

Topics will include: Identifying common engineering materials by their principal properties, Select materials for specific applications, Verify selected material as fit for purpose, Determine stresses in simple structures and mechanical components, Verify stress levels using appropriate reference material, Solve engineering problems involving algebraic expressions with one independent variable, Use trigonometry to solve practical problems, Solve quadratic equations, Statics, Dynamics, motion and rotation.

  • MEM30007A Select common engineering materials
  • MEM30006A Calculate stresses in simple structures
  • MEM30012A Apply mathematical techniques in a manufacturing, engineering or related environment
  • MEM23109A Apply engineering mechanics principles
  • MEM23004A Apply technical mathematics
