Training deal takes flight

A new collaboration between South Metropolitan TAFE (SM TAFE) and Flight Centre Travel Group is set to deliver training to 240 travel industry professionals.

Launched in early September, the Flight Centre Travel Group - SM TAFE partnership will up-skill Flight Centre’s local entry-level workforce by offering newly appointed trainees enrolment in the Certificate III in Travel qualification.

Flight Centre Travel Group's National Traineeship Program places new employees in a two-year pathway, providing career progression opportunities through additional training at Certificate III and IV levels.

Under the agreement, SM TAFE will provide quality assurance and issue final certificates to WA staff in the National Traineeship Program, while working closely with Flight Centre’s qualified trainers who deliver and assess the training.

SM TAFE Managing Director Terry Durant said the new partnership was an exciting step for the organisation.

“Demand for travel is on the rise as people increasingly choose to spend their money on experiences. This agreement represents significant progress towards building a talented and qualified workforce in the travel industry,” Ms Durant said.

Each month approximately 20 new Flight Centre employees from multiple WA locations will commence the Certificate III in Travel. The qualification focuses on the skills required to provide sales and operational advice and working under limited supervision.

"Flight Centre is excited to be partnering with SM TAFE and feel positive around the outcomes and opportunities we will be able to provide to new travel professionals," said Flight Centre Travel Group National Leader Peopleworks, Kylie Paatsch.
