A fashion business student has won South Metropolitan TAFE’s (SM TAFE) esteemed Higher Education Student of the Year award.
Sophie Lucivero (20) of Attadale received the award at SM TAFE’s Higher Education Class of 2016 Graduation Ceremony held at Crown Perth on 8 March.
The ceremony recognised more than 60 students graduating from higher education diplomas or associate degrees in the following study areas: Aerospace and Logistics; Business; Fashion and Personal Services; Hospitality and Culinary Arts; and Information Technology.
Sophie completed the two-year Associate Degree in Fashion Business at the Bentley Campus, and stood out as a result of her exceptional academic record (13 high distinctions and three distinctions) and innovation when it came to establishing an online business.
“When I first started the course I knew I wanted to work in fashion but didn’t know exactly what my focus was going to be, it really helped channel my ideas,” said Sophie.
“I put together a business plan for my online shop as one of the assignments and showed my parents who encouraged me to actually make something of it.
“The lecturers at SM TAFE were fantastic and had so much industry knowledge, in every conversation I’d learn something new.”
Alongside Temporarily Yours, her online luxury bag and accessory rental store, Sophie has started working in visual merchandising for designer Anna Thomas.
She plans on developing her business further with a possible partnership, or moving to London to work in fashion.
SM TAFE lecturer Lisa Piller said that Sophie used the theory and skills she learned in the course to develop her digital platform and brand.
“Sophie was concerned with ‘fast fashion’ including the impact of mass production on the environment, so wanted to create a business which was a sustainable alternative for fashion lovers,” Ms Piller said.
“It was evident she was going to be a success through her commitment and enthusiasm in class and she was always willing to help and mentor new classmates.”
The Higher Education Student of the Year award is sponsored by CDM Australia and the Rotary Club of Fremantle.
