Higher learning pathways create opportunities

Higher education courses at South Metropolitan TAFE provide you with a unique opportunity to begin or continue your study towards qualifications that are valued by employers and provide you with a pathway to higher levels of study. Our applied courses are developed with input from industry and prepare you to be employable upon graduation. They provide seamless pathways from TAFE programs you may have studied enabling you to progress without having to repeat your learning.

Our courses combine study of the theories and knowledge of a discipline area with the related vocational skills that will help you use that knowledge to enhance your employment prospects. Our diplomas and associate degrees will also prepare you for further study and provide a pathway into a university degree.

Studying at South Metropolitan TAFE gives you the advantage of small class sizes, personalised study assistance and access to applied learning. We use real world examples to illustrate our teaching and in many cases, you will have the opportunity to combine work in your chosen industry with your studies. This enables you to immediately apply what you learn and add value to your workplace from the beginning of your practice. You will also have opportunities to work on work-related assignments practicing your investigation, problem solving, writing and presentation skills.

With courses that are supported by industry, we use specialist facilities to build practical skills and provide seamless pathways from previous TAFE qualifications and to further study. South Metropolitan TAFE’s higher education offerings are a smart choice for students who want a different style of higher education.

How is the Associate Degree different to the other qualifications?

Associate Degrees are:

  • More focussed on the theoretical and conceptual foundations of a discipline than the Advanced Diploma, with less emphasis on industry‐specific workplace competency.
  • A shorter‐cycle higher education qualification offering both an exit point at the sub‐degree level and a fully articulated pathway into a Bachelor Degree for further in‐depth study and professional preparation.

Who can undertake it?

School leavers, mature age students, those with bridging or foundation qualifications, or holders of appropriate TAFE Certificates or Diplomas are eligible for entry. International students will need to meet English language requirements. Typically these require an IELTS level of 6 for entry. Employment experience is not a requirement.
